11 July 2017 - In just one week since its launch, a new campaign initiated by de-clic community brought together more than 11,000 citizens. The campaign requests the international organisation PEFC to withdraw the sustainability certificate awarded to Schweighofer. More details here: http://campanie.de-clic.ro/fara-PEFC
Until February 2017, Schweighofer, the largest softwood processor in Romania, enjoyed two international certifications: one from FSC**, the other from PEFC. De-clic community and its partners, Campact (Germany) and Aufstehn (Austria), convinced FSC to withdraw their certificate awarded to Schweighofer. Based on their own investigation, FSC concluded that Schweighofer had indeed logged wood illegally and had breached Romanian legislation. At present Schweighofer continues to be under investigation by FSC for having breached the Romanian standards on wood measurement.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) are the two main certification schemes for protecting forests against destructive practices. These organisations verify the legality of wood businesses and provide guarantees regarding wood origin. This type of certification gives companies access to international markets.
FSC has already concluded that there is clear and convincing evidence on the illegal practices used by Schweighofer for more than 10 years. Now it is time for PEFC to reach the same conclusion and to withdraw the certification awarded to Schweighofer.
“More than 40% of the wood logged in Romania is exported. Schweighofer's clients see the PEFC certification on the wood products and they believe everything is ok, which is completely wrong. Therefore it is important to have all Schweighofer's certifications suspended, because they are actually also used for hiding the origin of illegally logged wood", said Raluca Veștemeanu, de-clic campaigner.
